Pearl Buck once said that “if you want to understand today, you have to search yesterday.” Fascinated with history and the past, I enjoy studying art and art history, learning the thought processes of artists and their deeper meanings behind their works of art. The periods of art I find the most engaging are the Renaissance and Baroque periods, specifically in Italy. Masters including Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci, Jacob van Ruisdael, and Caravaggio have immensely influenced my appreciation and love for art.

My name is Carey Clement, Jr., and I recently graduated from the Academy of Art University with a Master's of Fine Arts degree in Art History, focusing on the High Renaissance, Mannerist, and Baroque periods. I previously graduated from the University of Oklahoma with a Bachelor's of Fine Arts degree in Art History. History and art have always been passions of mine, constantly learning and finding those hidden and deeper meanings. Michelangelo’s unique portrayal of David in a contemplative state rather than the act during or after striking Goliath; da Vinci’s constant desire to invent and test new methods of art, such as his fresco of The Last Supper; van Ruisdael’s depictions of intense atmospheres to heighten the mood of his paintings; Caravaggio’s use of chiaroscuro to show great emotion with extreme light and darkness. These characteristics and backstories behind the final works of art are greatly appealing. In order to understand and comprehend today, yesterday must be studied and understood. Iconic works of art from history still captivate not only art historians, but the general public to this day. Michelangelo’s Pieta, da Vinci’s Mona Lisa, and Caravaggio’s David with the Head of Goliath all hold deep, unexplored mysteries that might never be solved. There are even more mysteries and meanings yet to be explored. It is a passion of mine to explore and better understand these meanings, even possibly uncover those unexamined themes.

I strive to constantly learn something new each day, a characteristic that would prove vital throughout my graduate studies and into a museum role. It is a dream of mine to work within the museum institution, obtaining greater knowledge of art and art history while understanding the conversations between all works of art within the museum’s gallery. In order to understand today, one must search through the past. Art history is my passion to understand the present day through the artwork of past masters.
